Beddgelert

... pretty village in the heart of Snowdonia

Beddgelert

Beddgelert lies at the south end of the Nantgwynant valley. It is easily reached via a lavel footpath from Nantgwynant village. In Beddgelert there is plenty to explore! Visit the church, discover the legend of Gelert’s grave, the site of an old monastery and enjoy this pretty village in the heart of the mountains. However, it is also surounded by mountains and can be a good starting point for those wanting to summit Moel Hebog, Moel Ddu or who want to explore the paths to Llyn Cwm Ystradllyn. Beddgelert also has lots of options for those looking for a food break on a walk that passes through, starts or ends in the village. Access to the cycle trails of the Beddgelert Forest is also close by. The Welsh Highland Railway passes through the village. Beddgelert railway station was in operation, with a passing loop and three sidings, from 1922 to 1936, and reopened as part of the Welsh Highland Railway on 2009.

St Mary's Church Beddgelert

The church was once part of an Augustinian priory. In the 16th century, King Henry VIII ordered the dissolution of monasteries and the building became the main church of a parish. The church was restored twice in the 19th century but much of the medieval masonry survives, including some which probably pre-dates the rebuilding of around 1220 to 1230.

[Routes starting from or including Beddgelert feature in 'Walks in and around Nantgwynant' and 'More Walks in and around Nantgwynant', however routes to high mountain summits are not included]
